Networking is a term often emphasized by career coaches and professionals striving to advance in their fields. However, for Angela Schalow, a West Michigan insurance agent, the traditional approach to networking didn’t quite resonate.
“What would it look like if I stopped doing what I was told and instead networked in a way where I could have fun, where I could be my authentic, introverted self?” Schalow reflected. This question led to the founding of SWAN (Strong Women Arise Network) in 2019.
SWAN began as a Facebook group and has now grown to over 1,200 women. The platform provides women the opportunity to network online and connect at monthly in-person events.
“When women come to SWAN and discover that others are facing similar struggles, especially those of us who are entrepreneurial, they find a sense of camaraderie that makes a big difference,” Schalow explains.
For the last two years, SWAN has hosted an annual, all-day event called SWAN Con, which allows women to hear from each other and build lasting connections. Many members have shared how SWAN has positively impacted their lives. One woman recently reached out to Angela, recalling how the group helped her overcome imposter syndrome at a work conference.
“She reached out to let me know how thankful she was for SWAN—how the women in the group, who cared for her, recommended her, and checked in on her, gave her the confidence she needed,” says Schalow.
SWAN is designed for women of all backgrounds, including introverts, extroverts, professionals in various industries, and stay-at-home moms. Schalow notes that members have not only grown their businesses but have also formed deep friendships.
“By embracing who we are as women and viewing our feminine nature as strength—rather than weakness—we unlock the doors to our own success,” Schalow adds.
Currently, SWAN operates with three chapters in Michigan, but Schalow is eager to see it expand to other states. If you are interested in starting a SWAN chapter in your city, you can reach Angela Schalow at: angela@swansuccess.com.
